Double Down all 8's

Well it's been a great week for my father George Byrd.  He was having a slow hunting season and it picked up in a big way on Wednesday evening.  He was able to harvest a nice Alabama 8 pt. buck on family land.

Then on Thursday evening he was back in the woods and took another nice 8pt with a kicker.  What's the old saying,  "Strike while the iron's hot"?  I think if I were him I'd be hunting again on Friday.

Hunting with the Family.

This past weekend was a great time for me as a husband, father and outdoorsman.  It was a 3 day weekend for my family so I had a chance to spend some time outdoors.  I had a great time on Saturday taking my daughter to one of her classmates birthday party and hanging around the house.  On Sunday I had a chance to go hog hunting on the Mobile Tensaw Delta.  We found some great new places to hunt and found more deer sign than ever for the river swamp.

It was a perfect day for river hunting.  Above is a picture of an Osprey Nest,  I'm guessing we saw 20 or more of these sea eagle dwellings along the banks of the river.  Several hunters had a good day and will soon be enjoying fresh pork.

On Monday evening I went hunting with Jennie and Emily behind our home on family property.  Jennie took her first deer and now she's hooked on hunting.

Our Boykin Spaniel puppy is getting bigger now and loves to play.  We bought him a big box of toys from Sam's Club and Jennie has had to sew them up already. He likes to see what's inside the toys and what makes them squeek.

Catfish Roundup

15th Annual Catfish Roundup

Our family and friends, with the help and support of our community and many volunteers, have a day of fun in the sun for some very special people.  It's called the Baldwin Catfish Roundup and it is a chance for many people who spend the majority of their lives inside to enjoy some fresh air and a shot at catching a fish.  This is the 15th consecutive year that the Roundup has been held on a private pond located in Stapleton Alabama.  My grandmother Jeanette Grimes Cabaniss started this event to honor her beloved husband who had built her the fishing pond on the back side of their farm.  The event started out small with 250 volunteers and participants and has grown to over 1200 now.  It takes a lot of work to organize an event of this size and we have as many as 6 meetings a year to help organize the troops.  We have a live blue grass band,  the "Unknown Bluegrass Band", that donates their time and talent to the event.

This gets many of the participants out of their seat and up buck dancing.  Several clowns usually show up and perform face painting and balloon tricks.  And I mean real clowns not just a bunch of my kin folks but the cousins do plenty of clowning around as well.

We have several hundred fishing poles that we have to repair and keep in operation during the event.

Many of the participants have never been fishing and get a real kick out of catching that first fish.  Visitors come from many different states and places.  Some of these include many of our country's veterans who live in veteran homes.  Others come from nursing homes and families come as a group to celebrate the outdoors and an escape.  We cook the fish caught and grill hamburgers.  Everyone who wants gets to participate in a cake walk and wins a whole cake.   They leave with a smile on their face and a free T-shirt and cake.  We have several groups who have been to all 15 events and it is a circled date on the calender for them each year.

If you would like to help with this worthy event then feel free to contact me

The Baldwin Catfish Roundup will be held on October 19, 2013 in Stapleton Alabama.
The event is always looking for new sponsors and volunteers and all donations are tax deductible if you would like to donate.  Come October if you hear twin fiddles and a steel guitar and the sound of people cheering and laughing it might be our family and friends having a grand time at the Roundup.

My First Deer

My Nephew killed his first deer and at the age of eleven. He
was so excited about it he put a story together for a school project.

My First Deer

On November 22 my Dad and I decided to take a little hunting trip. It was a very cold afternoon with a hard wind blowing from the North.  We packed on the layers of clothing and were off to spend some time together in the woods.  I was excited to be going to my Grandfathers hunting camp in Stapleton Alabama.  I chose to hunt the large field where we saw many deer tracks in the grass.  We got in the blind about 3:00 pm and a flying squirrel jumped on my back and scared me half to death.  Shortly afterwards we got settled and the deer started moving.  Many deer where eating or passing through the field mainly doe and smaller bucks but we had to pass on them.  After sitting a while longer we could see another larger deer entering across the field.  As the deer moved into the field dad said there's one now get your gun ready.  I could see through the scope it was a nice six point.  I was breathing hard and heavy and my hands were shaking.  I was finally able to calm down, I took a deep breath and got in a good shooting position. I waited for the deer to turn to give me a better shot, my dad was putting up his binoculars and POW!  I got him!  I was so happy to kill my first deer so I got up and ran across the field to see him.  That was the hunt of my life.
When we arrived at Pawpaw's house we took pictures and cleaned the deer. My dad put some blood on my face to celebrate my first deer kill.  We took some pictures and will share the memories for the rest of our lives.  I was so happy that I could hardly sleep that night.

Colton is 18 years old now and still loves spending time outdoors with friends and family.  He has now graduated high school and helped win an Alabama State Championship in 6A High School football for the Daphne Trojans. He will attend The University of South Alabama this fall. Our family is very proud of him.  Thanks for sharing this story Colton.
